What is Tae Kwon-Do?

Tae Kwon-Do is the Korean art of self-defense. When translated, it is the "art of hand and foot fighting".

•     "Tae", means foot,

•     "Kwon", means fist

•     "Do", means method or  way

It is a Korean martial art which originated over 2000 years ago and believed to have come into existence as a means of defending oneself against wild animals and invading armies. In the year 2000  the Olympic games officially recognized Tae Kwon-Do.

The two basic parts of Tae Kwon-Do are:

•     Kata (Patterns) -- a series of choreographed motions, which increase in difficulty with each promotion of rank.

•     Dare Ee On (Sparring/Fighting) -- Bastrop Unified Tae Kwon-Do spars using light contact since sparring involves learning to develop strategies, reflexes, and the ability to "think on your feet".
